RETHINKING - MARCH 6, 2022 - GERMAN PURGE

When the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, Germany was shaken more than other countries for the Ukrainian drama.

Before, Germany maintained strong links with Russia for a series of political connections and the building of the famous gas pipeline between the country of Mr. Putin and the German lands.

About the new political turn on, Deutsche Welle has posted important journalistic material.

But also, the Wall Street Journal is paying attention to the changes in German politics.

Important is to read the political column that the WSJ Editorial board posted two days ago with the title: "Germany’s Scholz Puts Schröder on the Russia Spot.”

“The Chancellor’s policy revolution starts inside his own party."

“German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is undertaking nothing short of a revolution for his country’s foreign and security policy in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine invasion. Evidence that Mr. Scholz is serious came Thursday as he tackled his own party’s biggest Russia embarrassment.”

“That is the person of Gerhard Schröder, former chancellor. Mr. Schröder, like Mr. Scholz, a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), has spent the years since leaving office in 2005 as a highly paid political fixer and brand ambassador for Russian energy companies. He is chairman of Rosneft, was appointed last month to the board of Gazprom, and holds senior posts with companies responsible for the Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural-gas pipelines.”

The current German leader Olaf Scholz remarks that “a chancellor’s public service doesn’t end when he leaves office” in reference to Gerhard Schröder.

About this issue, in the blog sector of WSJ Online, I wrote the following comment:

“Germany needs a big political purge” to stop the “lobby” that politicians and influential German citizens made during years in favor of Putin's interests.
