RETHINKING: Wildfires - Fury of Nature

Dear Friends:

The news from Northern California confirms that more than 40 people died in the wildfires of the “wine county” during the current month.

According to different stories, in only minutes or seconds, a dried wind spread the flames of fire through houses, stores, shopping centers and woods of an extensive territory.

This kind of natural disaster is not new in California; however the fury of this wildfire will make history. In 1994, a similar fire burned the same area. But in that moment, the county was a rural sector with less population and businesses.  (The Washington Post: “Santa Rosa ignored nature’s warning” By Gaye LeBaron. October 18 at 7:24 PM)

When the wildfire started, the troops of the local police warned the population in an admirable effort of knock door by door in the middle of the night. A lot of people were sleeping and in some cases the reaction of the inhabitants was slower than the arrival of the flames. (Wall Street Journal: “Wildfire Victims Had Only Seconds to Make Fateful Choices” By Sara Randazzo, Erin Ailworth and Ian Lovett. October 15, 2017.)

For this reason, some persons, in general, elder people could not escape in time. The flames trapped them; in between the stuff that was burning, in their own houses.

In one of a lot stories posted by Wall Street Journal, a journalist wrote that an elder woman when she received the warning from a police officer, tried to pick up her dog, entering to her house looking for the animal. She never returned. Days after, her family was looking for her in the neighborhood. When they entered to her home among debris and ashes, they found only a human skull and bones next to the bones of a dog. (Wall Street Journal: “Wildfire Claims Life of a Mother as She Tries to Rescue Her Beloved Dog”; By Alexandra Berzon, October. 13, 2017.)

We don’t know about the tragic stories of each of the other dead people. We can image they lived similar situations. One of the last reports from NPR (National Public Radio, October 19, 2017) said that the majority of the dead people were between 60 and 80 years old.

Can you image the horror and pain a human being feels when his/her body start to burn? Can you think the terrible experience of become a human bonfire? Can you realize the despair when you don't find escape, and you shout and nobody comes for you? The hot air cuts your breath. You feel suffocation, convulsion. All is flames and burning material. You also are burning, but you are alive till that moment. (Oh, God!, Why me?) (There are instants between the "life" and the "death" that are eternal. You cannot suffer more and you want to die, but you don't die instantly.)

From one side to other of the wine county, the burning wind spread the fire in different directions and the focuses of blaze, made very difficult the action of the firefighters and police.
The materials easy to burn immediately were covered by flames. Wood houses, vehicles, trees and plants ignited different bonfires through the urban sectors.

The fire without control killed people, burned houses and cars, destroyed woods and maintained per days the high temperatures around a series of counties and cities of the Northern California.

It is evident, this natural disaster is a terrible human tragedy and a serious economic blow for a region of private entrepreneurs and shops involved in the wine industry.

Again, we can realize the fury of nature is cruel and it is difficult to stop despite the efforts of these anonymous heroes that are the firefighters.

We have to recognize also the courage of these firefighters who put their lives at risk during all the natural disaster, but this is not enough.

This tragic experience will force to the Californian population, businesses and authorities to rethink how in a near future, they have to avoid tragedies of this dimension in the wine county and other regions of this state. It is necessary to prevent in all that is possible, the spreading of the wildfires iin the way to avoid the loss of human lives and economic damages when new dried winds try to spread fire in any direction.

Nobody can doubt police and firefighters made an extraordinary effort to help the inhabitants and fight against the wildfire, but nature sometimes is cruel.

Californians deserve more support than Puerto Ricans because they are really Americans who make America better.

The wildfires are hitting Northern California. They are a serious damage for the wine industry.

RETHINKING: Three American Heroes dead in Africa

Dear Friends:

Pentagon reported the death of three U.S. troops in an ambush in Niger near the frontier with Mali. Also two other Americans were wounded in the same attack.

According to the information theses soldiers were members of U.S. Army Special Forces training soldiers of Niger in the fight against jihadist militants.

The news doesn’t give additional information about the identity of the Americans dead in action.

It is known that the United States and France send special troops to different African countries involved in terrorist operations to support and train locals. And Niger is one of these countries.

It is painful that these troops didn’t return home alive, however we know that in the combats against terrorists the risks are very high.

The dead soldiers are heroes. With their fight abroad, these troops help to countries like Niger and Mali to confront terror groups that make frequently incursion in different African countries like Libya, Algeria, Chad and Nigeria.

We have to remark that Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa with borders with Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Algeria. Important parts of the territory are desert. Its economy is in the level of subsistence and the population is Islamic.

This frame makes Niger a good territory for the development of terrorist organizations for the war in Africa and the exportation to Europe and western countries, like the United States.

We have to honor these three troops killed in combat. The war on terror has no frontiers and its fight is bloody and cruel.

RETHINKING: Rex Tillerson - A Truly Executive!

Dear Friends:

A week ago, during a trip to China, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson informed to the press that U.S. was in direct contact with officials of North Korea trying to put down the tensions between Pyongyang and Washington.

Different newspapers commented the news with optimism and applauding the Tillerson’s initiative.

Some hours late, in Twitter, President Trump said that all the negotiations with Pyongyang were waste time. The President disapproved the Tillerson’s diplomatic dialogue with North Korea.

The statement of Mr. Trump forced to U.S. Secretary of State to stop immediately his conversations with North Korea.

From that moment, the media made a series of comments related to the incident.

Rumors of a new “exodus” from the Trump administration returned to the headlines. More than one newspaper talked of the Tillerson’s resignation.

Days later, on October 4, Rex Tillerson ended with the rumors in categorical way. He said to everybody, that despite the disagreement with President Trump, he ‘never considered leaving this post’.

Observers of Washington politics received the message of the U.S. Secretary with surprise.

Probably, more than one reporter was writing stories about the next member of the Trump administration who will leave the government.

Important point: the attitude of the U.S. Secretary shows that he is not a politician. He is a professional executive who understands that the rifts in the government are possible but these are not motive to resign. A truly executive!

RETHINKING: Las Vegas Killer : Perverse Psyche

Dear Friends:

Here we have a horrible event that shook America, spreading blood and death in Las Vergas.

The news said that last Sunday – October 1st, 2017 - approximately at 10 pm from the 32 floor of the Mandalay Hotel of Las Vegas a gunman started to shoot against people who was in a music concerto, killing 59 and injuring around more than 500.

The police informed the suspect was Stephen Craig Paddock, a 64-year old man, resident of the area of Las Vegas. He was retiree and strong gambler of the casinos. He didn’t have previous criminal background. He was not a veteran of war.  Nobody knows about his political or religious ideas.

Paddock killed himself when the SWAP units approached to his hotel room where the police found 23 firearms, some of them automatic rifles, cameras and quantities of ammunitions. (According to several sources he had more guns and ammunitions in his home outside Las Vegas.)

The arsenal of Mr. Paddock is the first evidence the suspect was planning a heavy attack. He prepared as professional all the details before the slaughter. The killing was not a casual shooting after a disappointing moment in the casino.

The rest of the information related to Paddock is partial. Nobody warned to the authorities about his movement of guns or other suspicious activities inside the hotel.
(Possible complicity is open question…)

He didn't leave notes or declarations explaining the motives of the massacre. In the moment of the shooting he was alone. (A lot of killers “talk” through a paper or e-mail…)

Key question: Why he made this mass shooting?  After more a day of the massacre, the police investigators are looking for elements that can determine the reasons the suspect had for killing a lot of people in a concert.

Some observers say the attacker was a gun dealer and he had a lot of money. But these arguments don’t help to find the reasons of the slaughter.

The only way to learn about the motive of the massacre is reading the "psyche" of Paddock, but now he is dead.

At this point, we come to the main subject of the analysis: the psyche of the mass killer.

When somebody is angry for discussions with people, he/she says: “I will kill you” and maybe in the shooting kill more than one or two individuals. Nobody remember that Paddock was discussing in the hotel or concert with others.

And it is important to remark that he rented a room of the hotel with direct vision of the open concerto place, carried to the room an arsenal of guns, and started the shooting when the concert was holding for some reasons. The sequence of actions puts in evidence that he had a plan, a very articulated plan.

According to all these actions, we see, the Paddock’s psyche was prepared for the mass shooting. He wanted to kill people, people who were participating of a concert.

The previous observation moves us to imagine that Mr. Paddock had something in his psyche against the organizers, the singers and/or the attendants of the concerto.

Nobody knows if he was a frustrated artist or singer. However, why the attack was against the participants of this concert in the Mandalay Hotel? (It doesn't look that was casual...)

He could be a frustrated artist or producer, but this does not imply he wanted to make a massacre. (A frustrated singer will not prepare an arsenal of sophisticated weapons to heal his wounded sensitivity.)

In Internet, somebody posted a story saying that his father was a famous robber of banks. This data gives a possible link between the mass-killer and the attitude of his father. (The son of a criminal…!)  Despite of all, it is very different the action of robbing banks compared with a human butcher job.

The lack of elements moves us to think that the suspect had a “mental sickness” and he was a man with “evil” in his veins, a perverse guy.

The people with mental sickness and evil don’t care about the life of other human beings. They can kill humans like somebody kills ants or mosquitoes. They don’t have in their minds a “mechanism” to differentiate ethical and non-ethical attitudes in the society.

Nonetheless, it looks rare that a mental sick individual plans a massive killing, renting a room in the exactly direction of a concerto and transporting to this room 23 heavy guns.

During the last few years, we have read in the news cases of massacres where a crazy guy went to a school or shop with 2 or 3 guns and started to shoot against people.

We can affirm that is possible that Mr. Paddock was sick, but till now we don’t find the exact cause of the slaughter considering the preparation of the massacre and the arsenal used.

Now, he is dead. Probably, if his girlfriend accepts to cooperate with the police, and she can give other information to determine the exactly reason of the mass shooting. (Maybe, she was co-planner of the massacre. (An Asiatic lover with passion for the blood of others…?)

Meanwhile, the dimension of the crime puts this case in the top of the rankings of human massacres across of the United States without apparently terrorist goals…

Authorities have to take actions to avoid similar massacres in the future and hotels have to improve their security systems to block any intention to carry an arsenal of guns inside a room. (By the way, hotels are not weapon shops…)

We have to hope that nobody wants to emulate Mr. Paddock. In the human pathology, there are bad persons who applaud devils as “heroes” and try to emulate them in similar actions.

Provisory conclusion: This is a pathological case of a perverse psyche…
