THEME:  The Bible in Our Public Schools

Subject: Some people think in our public schools the students have to read the Bible and learn about its valuable content.

My Comment: During the last few years, the subject “school” became an important matter of debates across all America. Now somebody asks: “Why Public Schools Should Teach the Bible?” Who asks this question doesn’t think that our public schools have to teach religion, but yes the Bible.

Authorities, teachers, parents and their own students discuss with different arguments what is good and bad in our elementary schools, high schools and colleges.

By the way, recently, the low performance of our students in an international competition about mathematics generated negative reactions and unpleasant comparisons with the results of children of other countries like South Korea, Singapore and others.

About the teaching of the Bible, we can agree it is an important book to learn about our ancestors, their beliefs and their way of living long centuries ago.

From the other side, it is also true that the Bible inspired writers like Shakespeare in their literary creations.

However, if our children try to read for themselves an original version of the Bible, surely they will not understand the meaning of some stories and probably the result of this effort will end in a negative way.

Frequently, the reading of the Bible requires the assistance of teachers who know about the religious principles of generations of people across the evolution of Humanity.

Do we have those teachers in our schools? Do we have educators who can build “bridges” using the contents of the Bible and our current times without entering into the strict concepts of classes of religion in the Catholic and Protestant Churches

We understand that our public schools have to improve the teaching of subjects like mathematics, English grammar, history, geography and the civic and ethical principles of our society.

Also we know that the education about the civic principles of our country and the ethic principles of our civilization are completely necessary to form youngsters who must grow into good citizens, hard workers and responsible parents of new homes.

But we don’t believe that today somebody can plan to teach an introduction to theology in our public schools or assume the risk for the free interpretation of facts that throughout History have very different meanings depending on the time and location of the observers.

Meanwhile, we are confident there is a long series of urgent subjects that require a complete review in the teaching methodologies and learning process of our students of the K-12 schools. (2013/03/03) 0 Recommendations

THEME: Birth-Control for New York Rats

Subject: In New York City, the authorities of the train transportation are setting new war tactics against the rodents that live in the tunnels and train platforms.

My Comment: Like I can understand the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is looking the way to fight against the New York rats through the technique of birth-control.

According to previous press articles, during the days when the
Sandy storm hit New York, some experts of the public services of the city said that the rats will have problems to survive the harshness of the super-storm, but they were wrong.

New York is a big and old city with a lot of population, houses, stores and infrastructures where the rodents can find food to feed themselves like kings and queens. Also they don't have problems to live comfortable and breed new babies because they don't pay taxes, medical insurances and house rent.

I believe that in particular, the tunnels of the subways and the hiding places under the train platforms are great to shelter hundreds and thousands of rats despite the efforts of the authorities to eradicate rodents and plagues of non-good visitors.

More, the rodents don’t need to pay the train ticket when they want to visit other families and friends of their species in extreme places of the city because always for them, it will be easy to find a hiding corner under and above the passenger cabinets to travel without problems long distances or only to the next station.

The story posted in Wall Street Journal says that the experts in rats of the of the transit organization have tried to poison the rats through different methods without success.

The pest technicians used methods applied before in rural places and other places, but the
New York rats reacted with more intelligence than the others in front signals poison and/or traps.

Now the experts of the MTA try to use substances that will act like “birth-control” pills producing a permanent infertility in the rats.

The initiative looks good but if the “palate” of the
New York rats is more sophisticated than the rural rats, probably they have also smarter "instincts" to detect other “dangers” and risk situations for their lives.

We don’t speak the rat’s language to ask these small animals what they think about “birth-control” and if in their communities is prohibited the use of substances that will stop the births.

I think the rats enjoy breeding babies and living in big communities with parents and children in cities like
New York where they really have all they need to make a good life without the problems of high rent and the difficulties of transportation.

Personally, I believe the birth-control for rats will help the Metropolitan Transportation Authority only in a temporary way. Meanwhile the implementation of the program will be costly because we – the human beings – cannot walk through the small tunnel-streets without light and traffic signals where the rats run every time they want to avoid the persecution of cats or other animals or when they know they cannot sit in the door of a fancy restaurant of Manhattan because danger is near. THEME:  Taxing Smart-phone and Tablet Owners

Subject: The public broadcaster of Sweden is imposing the TV tax on smart-phones and digital tablets.

My Comment: The news says that Sweden’s public broadcaster is taxing the smart-phone and digital table users with the excuse that they can watch TV on their devices.

The initiative looks like a very bad antecedent for all the governments and countries that like to create taxes for everything.

The serious problem in the case of smart-phones it will be that the inspectors will stop you everywhere and ask for the document that shows you paid the taxes on time. Probably, in one day more than 2 inspectors will require your tax receipt in the train station, bus and supermarket, also at the exit of your work and when you are enjoying a good moment with a friend or couple in the restaurant or pub.

But the idea to charge taxes for watching of TV programs is not new in
Europe. In Germany, every time that you register a new residence, immediately, the local office of the TV government organization sends you a form asking for how many TV and radio devices you have in your home and cars and/or ships. If you refuse to answer the form, after that, an inspector comes to your home, probably during the evening when you are watching TV News.

Additionally, in some European countries you have to pay taxes when you confess yourself as being Catholic or Protestant. The only people who don’t pay the “religion-tax” till now are the Muslims and the persons who declare themselves as atheists.

Somebody asked if we will have to pay a tax for the air that we breathe. I don’t have doubts that if the hunger from the tax-creators continues, in a near future we will have to pay taxes for the fresh air of our public parks and squares. But nobody will return this tax when a wave of pollution covers the green areas of the city, like nobody returns your taxes when the TV programs stop in your area for technical reasons or storms.

In school, we learn that in a democracy, we have freedom of press, assembly, religion, speech… However, nobody explains that under the umbrella of the “democracy” it is also possible to install a new kind of dictatorship: the tax-dictatorship. (2013/03/02) 2 Recommendations

THEME:  Ruthless Kidnappings in the North African Desert

Subject: Eritrean refugees are kidnapping in the North African desert by nomadic tribes who as for ransom to their families and friends in U.S. and Europe.

My Comment: According to the news, in the desert, North African nomadic tribes kidnap people and after that call by mobile phone to their families in U.S. and Europe asking for a ransom.

All the African areas of sand desert are dangerous and we cannot entrust neither the men with security force uniforms nor the others dressed like Bedouins.

One time, in a trip from a
Red Sea tourist resort to Cairo, in a checkpoint, the police forced me with other foreign citizens to leave the car that we were driving and take a bus full of strange people without any explanation. After hours of driving, the driver received the order to free us in other checkpoint.

But I know about a worse experience from workers of a foreign oil company with exploration contracts exactly in the Eritrean coasts of
Red Sea, in an area dwelling by bellicose Bedouin nomadic tribes. The visit of one of group of armed Bedouins to the camp of the oil contractor was terrible.

Normally, the North African nomadic tribes are cruel gangs of bandits who enjoy torturing, raping and killing their victims. And the use of cell-phones is not new. In
2004, in the Egyptian coasts of the Rea Sea, I saw Bedouins rising camels and talking by mobile phone. (2013/03/02) 7 Recommendations

THEME:  United States

Subject: The negotiation between Democrats and Republicans about US$ 85 billion in budget cuts ended without an agreement to stop the spending cuts called “sequester” since March 1st.

My Comment: After all the “budge battles” between Congress and the White House during the last four years, now we are seeing a serious dysfunction of the government, an abnormal functioning of the key institutions of the federal government.

It is regrettable that we vote for the members of Congress and White House, but after that they are not able to do their job in the right way.

I believe we – the American citizens – deserve something better from our government. (2013/03/02)

Subject: After the period of official negotiation about the budget cuts, President Obama and Congress leaders met in the White House, but the dialogue was fruitless.

My Comment: Today the gap between President Obama and the Republicans is growing in a way that will be near impossible to fix.

At this moment, the subject is the "sequester". Tomorrow the motif of the dispute will be something else. This situation doesn’t look it will have an end in a short time.

But the blame game will damage the government institutions more than both parties think today.

In a real democracy the representatives of the majority has to work with the representatives of the minority and vice versa. When this basic principle doesn’t work, the democracy degrades itself into a demagogy that is a political system that appeals to emotion and prejudice. (2013/03/01) 4 Recommendations

Subject: In the trial about the WikiLeaks case, the accused Bradley Manning pleaded guilty for the majority of the charges against him, but he refused the main accusation: aiding the enemy.

My Comment: I am not a member of the military tribunal in charge of the case of Bradley Manning, but when somebody leaks classified documents about military issues, directly or indirectly, he is aiding the enemy.

About the magnitude of the damage produced by Mr. Manning, this is a technical evaluation that the experts in security from the Pentagon have to make. (2013/03/01)

Subject: The business press analyzes possible consequences of the “sequester” that will change the current practices of consumers and businessmen.

My Comment: During the last few weeks, everybody talks about the “sequester” like a “tsunami” that will demolish all.

The panic is generating a “huge wave” of fears in normal people, while our political establishment continues a debate without “end” because they know they will always survive this or any economic crisis.

Personally, I believe neither the “sequester” nor panic will help our economy. (2013/02/28) 1 Recommendation

Subject: President Obama and the lawmakers argue about the possible consequences of the "sequester".

My Comment: If both parts don’t have the intention to work together and assume a serious compromise, the meeting will be a waste time like a lot of previous conversations.

During the last four years, we saw a lot of meetings among Republican members of Congress and President Obama that ended in nothing.

We are watching the “same movie” nearly every day since last November. (2013/02/27)

Subject: In a Senate divide voting, Chuck Hagel was confirmed as defense secretary.

My Comment: Now that Chuck Hagel won Senate approval to become defense secretary, he begins a new chapter.

We hope, from his first day working in the Pentagon, Mr, Hagel makes of all the necessary efforts to be a good defense secretary.

Only with a good job, will he change the bad image that he gave to the country through the Congress hearing. (2013/02/27)

Subject: During the last days of February the debate about spending cuts between Congress and the White House was very intense but without agreement.

My Comment: The discussion face-to-face between President Obama and Congress leaders will be important if both parties make efforts to achieve a solution based on common conclusions.

During the last few months, we saw only separate declarations from President Obama and the Republicans accusing each other for the blame of the mess.

Now they don’t have to talk more about the past. They have to agree in the cutting and stop the "propaganda" campaigns. (2013/02/27)

THEME:  Europe

Subject: Benedict XVI ended its mandate as Pope of the Catholic Church with an emotional farewell.

My Comment: In the end, it is good Benedict XVI resigned as Pope because he didn’t give good answers to crucial issues of the current world.

We have to hope the new Pope transforms the Catholic Church in a realistic way according to the world that we are living in now that is very different compared with previous centuries.

Meanwhile, all the formal steps of the end of the reign of Pope Benedict XVI are only important for the memoirs of the
Vatican and the Catholic Church. (2013/02/28) 2 Recommendations

Subject: After all the scandals of his last days in charge of the Italian government, Silvio Berlusconi returned to the main scene as candidate in the election.

My Comment: The return of Silvio Berlusconi shows the Italians want to continue living in the same mess as before.

How many more scandals we will see from now? (2013/02/26) 1 Recommendation

Subject: The Italian voting was against the austerity measures of Prime Minister Mario Monti.

My Comment: If the Italians now vote for the wrong candidates, after that they don’ have to cry.

All looks like the efforts of Prime Minister Mario Monti will end without the implementation of his package of austerity measures.

But the problem is: the Italian election has implications for the future of the European Union where its authorities are trying to strengthen the foundation of the community with austerity measures. (2013/02/25) 1 Recommendation

Subject: The Swedish furniture company is involved again in another international scandal.

My Comment: It is not the first time that IKEA, the Swedish furniture company, is involved in an international scandal.

But today, the point is not about the previous processing and distribution of horse-meat through IKEA organization and other companies.

According to some information spread across of the European media, there is more than one organization trying to fill shelves of unknown shops and charities institutions with the “famous” horse-meat.

The real fact is nobody wants to put all the “horse-meat” in the trash boxes. Perhaps, you or your neighbor is eating now a disk with a portion of horse-meat mixed with other kind of meats and food. (2013/02/25) 1 Recommendation

Subject: Scottish Cardinal accused of inappropriate behaviors against some priests resigned before the Vatican conclave starts.

My Comment: The story says that Scottish Cardinal Keith O´Brien resigned as Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh before the conclave of cardinals that will elect a new Pope in Rome.

According to the information available, Cardinal Keith O’Brien was involved in inappropriate behaviors with some priests and former priests at the seminary of St. Andrew’s College in 1980.

As I said in previous comments, during decades and perhaps centuries, the sexual abuse through the aisles of the Catholic Church was not only against children and women.

Some years ago, a member of my family who wanted to be priest gave me a horrible testimony when he suddenly left a seminary and also the Catholic Church. He said that his theological teacher who during the mornings was teaching in the classroom, during the night came to the dormitory of the seminarians with very different intentions.

I believe there are more cardinals who have to follow the step of Cardinal Keith O’Brien resigning before the conclave for the election of a new pope.

The right is all the cardinals who were involved in inappropriate behaviors against children, women and/or seminarians resign before the conclave.

The Catholic Church needs a new leader with a clean background and high ethical principles to have the authority of leading the deepest changes of the Church after many centuries.  (2013/02/25) 6 Recommendations

Subject: Spanish protesters demonstrate against Mr. Rajoy and his government across all the country after the people knew about the money he received  to fix the banking mess.

My Comment:  I do not have anything personal against Mr. Rajoy but he was accused of corruption with money that he received in connection with the mess of the Spanish banking.

In these circumstances, when a politician is decent, the only way to clean “his hands” is resigning and explaining his actions in front of the Courts (He has the right to prove if he is innocent as a normal citizen). But he didn’t resign and till now nobody knows the truth about the rewards he and other members of his party received in the recent months.

In a moment when a lot of Spaniards are on the street without a job or working for coins of euro, it is not admissible that the leader of the country acts in the way that Mr. Rajoy is acting. The personal ego should always be put down in cases where the institutions are shaking. This is the right attitude of honest people (politicians and normal citizens).

I always was an advocate of the democratic institutions and the authorities elected through a democratic process. But from the other side, I am strong defender of Justice in any circumstances.

According to my frequent communication with friends who live in
Spain today, I know the situation is critical there for the normal citizens, for the workers who don’t find a job, for the university graduates without a future, for the people who want the best for their country and they don’t have the “tools” to change the institutions. For all of them I want Justice now!  (2013/02/24)

THEME:  The World: Asia, Middle East, Africa

Subject: The United States offers food and medical assistance to the Assad’s opposition but the Syrian rebels want weapons and military assistance.

My Comment: The conversation between U.S. Secretary John Kerry and French President François Hollande will not move the “balance” in the Syrian civil war from one side to another.

The changes in the Syrian case will only come when
Russia stops the diplomatic, financial and military support to Mr. Assad’s government and gives the Syrian President and his family a place for living.

But after that, probably
Syria will enter into a crueler period than now if the Syrian Opposition Coalition is not helped to pacify the country in a short time. (2013/02/28) 1 Recommendation

THEME:  Latin America

Subject: International observers analyze the future of the close relationships between Cuba and Venezuela after Hugo Chávez.

My Comment: All looks like after a series of cancer surgeries, the Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is still fighting against a terminal disease.

About the future of the “Cubazuela” (
Cuba+Venezuela), we cannot predict today what will happen in Venezuela after the death of Hugo Chávez. However, we agree that a call for new elections will mark a change in the current relationships between Cuba and Venezuela.

I believe the poor Venezuelan people will have priority, instead of the economic assistance to the
land of Fidel and Raul Castro. (2013/03/02)

Subject: International observers fear a debt default will hit Argentina.

My Comment: Argentina is a risky country since long time ago because its different governments haven't followed a clear political line for decades. A lot of its political leaders and economic advisers manage the economy and finance of the country like a "butcher’s notebook" with an unsharpened pencil. (2013/03/01)

THEME:  Economy, Business and Technology

Subject: Barnes & Noble posted big losses of its e-book Nook division.

My Comment: It is not surprise that the Nook digital business from Barnes & Noble suffered a big fall during the last quarter.

Since the introduction of the Nook, the employees of the Barnes & Noble’s stores didn’t know how to sell digital devices with content in a bookstore. Nobody made enough effort to learn the secrets of electronic books and their potential power.
.
I remember when I entered a bookstore and I saw the first Nook. I tried to learn a little about its features. The employee who was behind the counter couldn’t give at least one answer. One month later I came back to the same store and I saw the same employee trying to answer the questions of another customer. When he saw me, he said to his new customer: “This guy knows more than me about this machine. He will help you.”

Really, they lost a great opportunity to lead in a niche of technology where they have the perfect environment to generate the e-book revolution: bookstores. (2013/03/01) 1 Recommendation

Subject: The predictions from industry analysts about smart-phone sales during 2012 failed.

My Comment: Today everybody makes predictions about the expansion of smart-phone sales but nobody knows how many devices will sell across the world in one or two years and who will be the leading providers in the long term because till now the market is not stable. It is in complete evolution.

All that we see is a guessing game, but it is impossible to predict behaviors in a segment of consumer innovative digital devices where there is more than one protagonist: software providers, hardware providers, application developers, content generators, services providers, consumers and others.

Everybody makes its calculations from its corner, but nobody knows all the figures of each protagonist of this market. For this reason, simple math doesn’t work. (2013/03/01) 1 Recommendation

Subject: LinkedIn is growing in the segment of social media better than previous expectations.

My Comment: This story tries to put LinkedIn at the top “altar” of the social media with all the angels of heaven.

From its first days, “the Ugly Duckling of Social Media” is working in a more reasonable way than the fancy Facebook, without noisy music drums that deafen.

Independently of all, from my perspective, Linkedln is not perfect. I like some of its initiatives and I don’t like others.

Personally, I don’t like when a social media pushes me to contact people they believe I like but I really don’t like. I hate this technique used by all the social networks.

One suggestion-message is enough. But when they see that a member of the network refuses to contact another person, they should stop sending reminders like this: “A friend is waiting for your confirmation”. This technique is abusive in the case of Facebook. Twitter also repeats its suggestions frequently. LinkedIn is more balanced. But till now, nobody is smart enough to stop the series of “stupid messages” after the second time that the member of the network deletes the reminder without answering their suggestion.

In summary, till now we don’t have a “perfect social network”. All that we see, they are experiments. However, from my point of view, LindedIn looks better than an “ugly duckling”.  (2013/02/28)

Subject: Different financial analysts debate about the real worth of Twitter as potential public company.

My Comment: Today: February 2013, it is not easy to determine the real value of social networks because till now it is a segment of technological companies in evolution.

I think the value of Twitter depends on the perspective from where we are seeing this company.

I like Twitter more than Facebook, but I think US$ 10 billion is a lot of money! (2013/02/27) 2 Recommendation
