After the invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s President Putin threatened Finland and other Russian neighbors. Till that moment, the Finnish population maintained a total neutrality in the conflicts between the West and Russia.
The situation changed dramatically after February 24, when the Russian tanks entered Ukrainian territory.
Today the Wall Street Journal posted the following story “Finland, Sweden Apply for NATO Membership, Breaking Decades of Neutrality.
The story written by Sune Engel Rasmussen starts “Finland and Sweden formally applied for NATO membership on Wednesday, a move that, if approved, would fundamentally transform the security landscape of Northern Europe and give the alliance a valuable edge against Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.”
My opinions posted in the blog section of WSJ Online received the LIKED of the members of the WSJ Community:
- “Now is not the time of neutrality. Ukraine's drama is a warning for others.”
- “Putin knows that Russia will not win against a strong NATO.”
From my perspective, this was a “Checkmate, Mr. Putin”
