RETHINKING - NOVEMBER 17, 2021 - Drones from Italy to China

Since the first moment, the Chinese have paid a lot of attention to the development of drones. Thanks to this interest, they started companies focused on drones for hobbyists.

Some of these drone makers are selling international models of devices that we find in the electronics shops of the western countries.

But the ambitions of China are not limited to their own research in drones. They are also spying what the others are making in this subject like in all the top technology niches.

For this reason, it does not look strange that the Chinese were to Italy to buy a military drone maker that tested its technology in Afghanistan.

And here the news from the Wall Street Journal “In 2018, a Chinese state-controlled company bought an Italian manufacturer of military drones. Soon after, it began transferring the company’s know-how and technology—which had been used by the Italian military in Afghanistan—to China.” ("China Bought Italian Military-Drone Maker Without Authorities’ Knowledge" by By James Marson  in Brussels and Giovanni Legorano in Rome, on November 15, 2021)

WSJ added “Italian authorities are investigating the 2018 takeover of Alpi Aviation Srl by a Hong Kong-registered company that they say is a front for the Chinese state and was in the process of transferring the company’s technical and intellectual property to a new production site in China.”

This is a new sample of how China is working to acquire sensible technology from other countries to embed in its own projects.

The news are full of similar cases, including the stealing of the secrets of very focused technologies that the Americans and Europeans developed after years of research and big investment of money.
