RETHINKING - JUNE 9, 2022 - MERKEL'S CONFESSION

Two days ago, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave her first conference after she left the government last December 2021.

The key subject of this conference was about the Ukrainian-Russian war and her friendship with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

In a first instance, we learned about the Merkel's declarations through Deutsche Welle. And yesterday – June 8, 2022 – the Wall Street Journal posted an Editorial Column titled “Angela Merkel’s Limited Regrets”

According to WSJ, “the former German Chancellor says she wasn’t naïve about Putin”

In the introduction of the column, the paper wrote “Rarely has a foreign policy legacy been discredited as rapidly, and thoroughly, as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s . In 16 years at the top of the German government, she thought she could moderate Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions, and in the process she made Germany and Europe vulnerable to his energy blackmail.”

WSJ also wrote “Mrs. Merkel condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and said she was “at no time given in to illusions” that her policy of engaging with Russia through trade would change Mr. Putin’s behavior. “I was not naive,” she said.”

My blog comment posted in WSJ Online about this issue: “If Angela Merkel was not naïve about Putin, she knew about Putin’s plans from a long time ago. Probably, she was an accomplice of the Russian leader, and maybe in her decisions and actions, she betrayed her country”
